Horseshoe Mound Preserve, located at Galena's eastern gateway, spans nearly 200 acres, offering some of the most scenic views in northern Illinois. The preserve features a central gathering area at the McKeague Family council ring, viewing scopes, and scenic overlooks. From these vantage points, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Galena, distant views of Bellevue and Dubuque in Iowa, the Mississippi River, and other geological mounds in Iowa and Wisconsin.Hiking trails meander throughout the property, including a trail that winds through a restored oak savanna and unique rock outcroppings. The Spiroff Overlook, opened in 2021, offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and downtown Galena. The Cooke and Mills Family overlooks, located at the east and west ends of the preserve, also provide exceptional vistas.Beyond its natural beauty, Horseshoe Mound is believed to be an ancient Native American burial site and ceremonial ground, adding a layer of cultural depth to any visit. The large stones that make up the Council Ring align with the summer and winter solstices. Informative signs along the trails share insights into the area's ecology and history.The preserve is managed by the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF). It is open to the public for passive outdoor recreation daily from 6 AM to 7 PM. Visitors can explore, hike, bird-watch, picnic, and learn about local geology while enjoying the views.
