Discover more about Cave-In-Rock State Park

Cave-In-Rock State Park, located in Hardin County, Illinois, along the Ohio River, is a captivating destination that combines natural splendor with a rich, often turbulent, history. The park's namesake, a 55-foot-wide cave carved into the limestone bluffs by the relentless forces of wind and water, stands as a testament to the area's geological past and its colorful human history.Originally discovered by the French explorer M. de Lery in 1729, who named it 'caverne dans Le Roc', the cave served as a shelter for Native Americans and early travelers. However, it gained notoriety in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as a hideout for river pirates and outlaws, including the infamous Samuel Mason and the Harpe brothers, who preyed on unsuspecting travelers along the Ohio River. These outlaws used the cave as a base for their operations, ambushing and robbing passing boats. In 1929, the State of Illinois acquired the initial 64.5 acres that would become Cave-In-Rock State Park, now expanded to 204 acres. Today, the park offers visitors a chance to explore the historic cave, hike scenic trails through wooded areas, and enjoy panoramic views of the Ohio River. The park features picnic areas, playgrounds, camping facilities, and the Cave-In-Rock Restaurant and Lodge, offering Southern-style cooking and comfortable accommodations. The cave itself is easily accessible via a short trail from the parking lot, though the trail is not handicap-friendly and can be flooded during high river levels. Inside the cave, visitors can marvel at the unique rock formations and imagine the lives of those who once sought refuge or ill-gotten gains within its walls. The park also offers two main hiking trails, Hickory Ridge and Pirates' Bluff, providing opportunities to explore the surrounding forests and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
