Millstone Bluff Archaeological Area, nestled within the Shawnee National Forest near Simpson, Illinois, offers a unique glimpse into the lives of prehistoric Native American cultures. This significant site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was once a thriving village, primarily inhabited by Mississippian peoples between AD 1350 and 1550. Archaeological study indicates that the site was also used by Woodland Indians. The bluff rises 320 feet above the surrounding valley, providing a naturally defensible location.The interpretive trail, nearly a mile long, winds through the ancient village site atop the bluff. As you explore, you'll discover remnants of semi-subterranean houses where the Mississippian people lived. These homes were constructed with timber posts and woven branches, packed with clay for insulation. The trail also leads to a stone box cemetery, where the Mississippians buried their dead with tools, pottery, and food for the afterlife.One of the most intriguing features of Millstone Bluff is the rock art site, showcasing petroglyphs etched into the stone by the Mississippians. These carvings depict various images, including bird and spider figures, as well as the cross and circle motif common in Southern Illinois. The site also features stone forts, built by Late Woodland peoples between AD 600 and 900. These stone enclosures may have served as fortifications or for ceremonial purposes. Early American settlers quarried millstones from the bluff's Kinkaid limestone. The quarry, with its blasting marks, is visible from the parking area.Today, Millstone Bluff is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, which maintains the interpretive trail and provides informative signage.
