Getting There

  • Driving

    From Illinois Route 3, turn east onto Muddy Levee Road, then north onto LaRue Road. Turn right onto Pine Hills Road; the lower trailhead is on the right in about 0.4 miles, and the upper trailhead is about 0.6 miles further up Pine Hills Road. Parking is available in small lots at both trailheads. Be aware that the parking can be tricky due to the slant of the lots. There are no fees for parking or access.

Inspiration Point Trailhead marks the start of a scenic trail within the LaRue-Pine Hills Research Natural Area, known for its ecological diversity. The trail itself is a 0.7-mile out-and-back path that leads to Inspiration Point, a blufftop offering stunning views. From this vantage point, hikers can see the Mississippi River valley and the Big Muddy River bottomlands stretched out below.The trail is considered moderately difficult, with some steep areas and loose rocks. There are two trailheads, an upper and a lower, both accessible from Pine Hills Road. The upper trailhead provides a shorter, easier route to Inspiration Point, while the lower trailhead involves a climb past trees and wildflowers. The area is home to a diverse array of plant and animal life, including over 170 bird species, reptiles, and wildflowers.Historically, the trail was originally built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Today, Inspiration Point remains a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts seeking an escape into the beauty of Southern Illinois.
