Discover more about Donner Party Historic Site

The Donner Party Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois, commemorates the beginning of one of the most tragic stories in American pioneer history. On April 15, 1846, brothers George and Jacob Donner, along with their families and other emigrants, departed from this site in search of a new life in California. The group, numbering around 90 people, set off with wagons and dreams of a better future. The site serves as a starting point to reflect on the Donner Party's journey, which was marked by poor decisions, unforeseen challenges, and ultimately, tragedy. The Donner Party, also known as the Donner-Reed Party, faced numerous setbacks, including taking a shortcut called the Hastings Cutoff, which added to their travel time and depleted their resources. Trapped by early and heavy snowfall in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the winter of 1846-1847, the emigrants faced starvation and resorted to desperate measures, including cannibalism, to survive. Only 48 of the original 87 members of the party survived.Today, the site offers visitors a chance to learn about the Donner Party's story and contemplate the challenges faced by these early pioneers. While there may not be extensive exhibits or preserved structures, the historical marker provides a place for reflection on the human cost of westward expansion and the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.
