Bowen Park, located along Sheridan Road in Waukegan, Illinois, is a 60-acre recreational area with a rich history. The park's landscape includes an old-growth forest and a scenic ravine, offering a natural escape.The land was originally a residential property built in 1843. John Charles Haines, a prominent Illinois politician and former Mayor of Chicago, owned the property from 1857 to 1896. In 1911, Jane Addams and Louise DeKoven Bowen purchased the land and transformed it into the Joseph T. Bowen Country Club, a summer retreat for children from Chicago's Hull House. For over 50 years, the club provided underprivileged children with recreational opportunities and a connection to nature.In 1963, the Waukegan Park District acquired the land, opening it to the public as Bowen Park. Today, visitors can explore the park's walking trails, enjoy the playground, and visit the Waukegan History Museum, housed in the Haines House. The Jack Benny Center for the Arts is also located in Bowen Park, offering various cultural events and performances. The park hosts various events throughout the year, including arts and crafts programs, community yard sales, and holiday celebrations.
