    If you are in downtown Waukegan, start at the Waukegan Public Library at 128 N County St. Head north on County St for about 0.3 miles until you reach Washington St. Turn left onto Washington St and continue for 0.4 miles. You will pass the Waukegan City Hall on your left. Continue straight until you reach the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr Ave. Cross the street at the intersection and continue walking straight; you will be on a path that leads you towards the Historical Marker located in Waukegan Township.

  • Public Transport

    From the Waukegan Metra Station, exit the station and head north on N Genesee St. Take a right on Washington St and board the #565 bus (Pace Bus) heading towards the Waukegan City Center. After a short ride, get off at the stop near the intersection of Washington St and Martin Luther King Jr Ave. From there, walk south on Martin Luther King Jr Ave for a short distance until you reach the Historical Marker. A single ride on Pace Bus costs $1.75.

The Waukegan Township Historical Marker offers a glimpse into the past of this Lake County, Illinois, community. The area was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi Indians and known as "Little Fort," a French trading post. In 1829, the Potawatomi ceded their lands to the Federal Government.In 1841, Little Fort became the county seat due to its growing population. Residents renamed the town Waukegan, meaning "fort" or "trading post" in Potawatomi, in 1849, marking a shift from its humble beginnings. Waukegan's location on Lake Michigan made it a key port for shipping produce and grain to Chicago. The arrival of the Illinois Parallel Railroad in 1855 spurred manufacturing, leading to further growth and diversification.Waukegan Township has continued to evolve, now encompassing parts of Waukegan, Beach Park, Park City, and North Chicago. The historical marker stands as a testament to the area's heritage and its ongoing development.
