The Waukegan Metra station is located within walking distance of the harbor. From the station, walk east towards the lakefront and follow signs for Waukegan Harbor. Once at the harbor, proceed along the pier to reach the lighthouse. Metra fares vary depending on the distance traveled; a one-way ticket from Chicago to Waukegan costs approximately $7 - $10. From the Metra station, it is about a 15-20 minute walk to the lighthouse.
Parking

Several parking lots are available near Waukegan Harbor. From Grand Avenue (Route 132), turn onto Pershing Road and then left onto E. Madison St. Parking is available in the lots near the harbor. Parking fees range from $5 - $10 per day. Be aware of signs indicating "Harbor Authority Only". An extra parking key can cost $75 per season.

The original lighthouse, a brick tower on shore, was built in 1849 when Waukegan was known as Little Fort. As the town and harbor grew, a new iron tower was constructed in 1889 to replace the original light. In the early 1900s, the pier was extended, and the lighthouse was moved to its current location. A fog signal building was added in 1905 but was later destroyed by a fire in 1967.Today, the Waukegan Harbor Light features a white cylindrical tower with a green band and an occulting green light. While the lantern and fog signal are gone, the lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. Visitors can stroll along the pier, enjoying views of the harbor, Lake Michigan, and even the Chicago skyline on clear days.
