Discover more about Amar Singh Gate

Amar Singh Gate, located at the southern entrance of Agra Fort, is a significant architectural and historical landmark that played a crucial role in the fort's defense. Originally known as Akbar Darwaza, the gate was renamed after Amar Singh Rathore, a Rajput noble who famously rebelled against the Mughal Empire. Built during Emperor Akbar's reign, Amar Singh Gate is constructed from red sandstone, a hallmark of Mughal architecture. The gate also served as the main entrance to Agra Fort for many years and was the path through which emperors, nobility, and important visitors entered the grand complex. Today, most tourists enter through this gate to explore the vast complex of palaces, courtyards, and gardens that offer a glimpse into the opulence and strategic importance of the Mughal Empire. The gate's design incorporates defensive features, including a crooked pathway to prevent enemy invasions using elephants. Inside the gate, visitors can admire the fusion of strength and elegance that characterizes much of Mughal architecture. The oblong and arched panels in the lower portions are adorned with multi-colored glazed tiles, mainly in yellow, green, blue, and white colors.
