Discover more about Mehtab Bagh

Mehtab Bagh, translating to 'Moonlight Garden,' is a historically significant garden complex located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Situated on the opposite bank of the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal, it provides a breathtaking, unobstructed view of the iconic monument. The garden is believed to have been designed as an integral part of the Taj Mahal complex, aligning perfectly to create a symmetrical and harmonious layout. Emperor Babur initially built the garden in the early 16th century, and it was later enhanced by Shah Jahan as a moonlit pleasure garden to admire the Taj Mahal. The garden is designed in the Charbagh style, a Persian-inspired quadrilateral layout divided into four equal parts by walkways and waterways, representing the Islamic concept of paradise. Legend has it that Shah Jahan intended to build a black marble mausoleum for himself in Mehtab Bagh, mirroring the Taj Mahal, but this plan was never realized. Over time, the garden fell into disrepair due to floods and neglect. However, in the 1990s, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) began extensive renovations, restoring the garden to its former glory. Excavations revealed a large octagonal tank with 25 fountains, a central tank, and a baradari (pavilion) on the east. Today, Mehtab Bagh is adorned with a variety of flora, offering a tranquil retreat for visitors and a unique perspective of the Taj Mahal, especially during sunset and full moon nights.
