The Shahi Jama Masjid, located in the heart of Agra, is a stunning example of Mughal architecture and a significant historical and religious site. Built in 1648 by Jahanara Begum, daughter of Emperor Shah Jahan, it served as the principal mosque of Agra. The mosque's construction took six years and involved over 5,000 workers. The mosque features a rectangular plan with a spacious courtyard that can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers. The structure is primarily built of red sandstone, with white marble used for intricate decorations and inlays. The prayer chamber has five arched entrances, with the central one set within a high pishtaq adorned with Persian inscriptions praising Shah Jahan and Jahanara. Three bulbous domes, decorated in a herringbone pattern of red and white stone and topped with lotus-flower finials, crown the prayer chamber. Two tall minarets, standing at 40 meters high, flank the mosque. Notably, the mosque stands opposite the Agra Fort, near the Agra Fort Railway Station. A spacious octagonal Tripolia Chowk once connected the mosque to the Delhi Gate of Agra Fort but was later destroyed to make way for the railway station.
