Discover more about Namdapha National Park & Tiger Reserve

Nestled in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh, Namdapha National Park is a remarkable wilderness and a biodiversity hotspot in the Eastern Himalayas. Spanning nearly 2,000 square kilometers, it's the third-largest national park in India, boasting a diverse range of habitats from lowland rainforests to alpine meadows and snow-capped peaks. Established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1972 and declared a National Park and Tiger Reserve in 1983, Namdapha's name is derived from the Singpho words 'nam' (water) and 'dapha' (origin), referring to the origin of the Noa Dihing River. The park's history is also intertwined with World War II, as its forests provided refuge for Allied soldiers. Namdapha is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, harboring over 1,000 floral and 1,400 faunal species. It's one of the few places in the world where you can find four species of big cats: tigers, leopards, clouded leopards, and snow leopards. Other notable inhabitants include elephants, red pandas, hoolock gibbons (India's only ape species), and a variety of primate species. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the park's diverse avian population, with over 425 species recorded. The park's unique location at the crossroads of the Indo-Malayan and Indo-Chinese biogeographic regions contributes to its rich flora, with evergreen, moist deciduous, subtropical, temperate, and alpine forests. The Noa Dihing River flows through the park, adding to its scenic beauty. Visiting Namdapha requires obtaining permits and navigating challenging terrain. However, the rewards are immense, offering a chance to experience a truly wild and untouched paradise.
