Car
If you're traveling by car, start from Guwahati, which is approximately 500 km away from Tawang Monastery. Take NH27 towards Tezpur, and then continue on NH15 until you reach Bomdila. From Bomdila, follow the road signs to Tawang, which is about 100 km away. The roads can be winding and may take around 12-14 hours. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition as the terrain can be challenging. There are no tolls along this route, but be prepared for fuel costs.
Bus
For public transportation, you can take a bus from Guwahati to Tezpur. Buses depart regularly and the journey takes about 6-8 hours. From Tezpur, you can catch another bus to Tawang, but you will first need to go to Bomdila. The bus from Tezpur to Bomdila takes around 5 hours. After reaching Bomdila, switch to a local bus or shared taxi to Tawang, which is approximately 100 km away and takes about 4-5 hours. The total cost for the bus journey can vary but expect to pay around INR 700-1,000 for the entire journey.
Shared Taxi
From the nearest major city, Bomdila, you can hire a shared taxi to Tawang. Shared taxis are available from the local taxi stand and can accommodate 4-6 passengers. This is a faster option compared to buses and will take around 4-5 hours. The cost for a shared taxi is generally around INR 300-500 per person, depending on the number of passengers.
Local Transport
Upon reaching Tawang, local transport options like auto-rickshaws and taxis are available to take you to Tawang Monastery. The monastery is located about 4 km from the town center. The fare for an auto-rickshaw should be around INR 100-150. Ensure to negotiate the fare beforehand, as prices may vary.
