Bibi Ka Maqbara: The 'Taj of the Deccan'

Discover the Bibi Ka Maqbara in Aurangabad, a beautiful mausoleum and testament to Mughal love, often called the 'Taj of the Deccan'.

4.2

Bibi Ka Maqbara, meaning 'Tomb of the Lady,' is Aurangabad's principal monument and a testament to Mughal architecture in the Deccan region. Constructed in 1660 by Prince Azam Shah, son of Emperor Aurangzeb, it was dedicated to his mother, Dilras Banu Begum, also known as Rabia-ul-Durrani. The mausoleum is often referred to as the 'Taj of the Deccan' because of its striking resemblance to the Taj Mahal in Agra, built by Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The Bibi Ka Maqbara was designed by Ata-ullah, son of Ahmad Lahauri, the chief architect of the Taj Mahal, and engineered by Hanspat Rai. The construction cost approximately Rs. 668,203, a sum significantly less than that spent on the Taj Mahal. This disparity in budget, along with the use of locally sourced materials like basaltic trap for the construction above the dado level, has led some to view it as a less grand replica. However, it stands as a unique expression of Mughal architectural traditions blended with Deccan influences. The mausoleum is laid out in a Charbagh garden, a classic Mughal design featuring a four-quartered layout with water channels, enhancing the overall sense of serenity and grandeur. The structure itself is built on a raised square platform with four minarets at its corners. After passing through the main entrance, a small tank and a low-profile screen wall lead to the main structure. The interior is encased with marble up to the dado level, with fine plaster covering the basaltic trap above, adorned with stucco decorations. Bibi Ka Maqbara is more than just an architectural marvel; it's a symbol of love, memory, and the Mughal empire's reach into southern India. While it may not rival the Taj Mahal in grandeur, its own considerable charm and historical significance make it a must-see destination in Aurangabad.
