Discover more about BIBI KA MAQBARA

Bibi Ka Maqbara, meaning 'Tomb of the Lady,' is Aurangabad's principal monument and a testament to a son's love for his mother. Constructed in 1660 by Prince Azam Shah in memory of Dilras Banu Begum, the first wife of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, it bears a striking resemblance to the Taj Mahal, the mausoleum of Mumtaz Mahal. This similarity has earned it the title of 'Taj of the Deccan'. While inspired by the Taj Mahal, Bibi Ka Maqbara possesses its own distinct charm. The mausoleum is set within a Char Bagh garden, a classic Mughal design with a symmetrical layout, measuring approximately 458 meters north-south and 275 meters east-west. The high enclosure walls feature pointed arched recesses and bastions, adorned with pilasters and small minarets. A pathway with fountains leads to the main structure. The main structure is encased in marble up to the dado level, with basaltic trap used for the rest of the construction up to the base of the dome, which is also made of marble. Fine plaster and stucco decorations adorn the mausoleum. An inscription indicates that the mausoleum was designed by Ata-ullah, son of Ahmad Lahauri, the chief architect of the Taj Mahal, and engineered by Hanspat Rai. The crypt containing Dilras Banu Begum's remains is located below ground level. Though perhaps not as grand as the Taj Mahal due to budgetary constraints, Bibi Ka Maqbara stands as a symbol of love and a significant example of Mughal architecture in the Deccan.
