Discover more about Basavanagudi

Basavanagudi, meaning 'Bull Temple,' derives its name from the iconic Bull Temple (Dodda Basavana Gudi) dedicated to Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva. This area, one of Bangalore's oldest, was initially established in 1898 to alleviate the plague in the Pete area. It was designed to accommodate diverse communities, featuring wide roads, shops, and essential amenities. The Bull Temple, constructed in the Vijayanagara architectural style, houses a massive monolithic Nandi statue, approximately 4.5 meters in height and 6.5 meters in length. Legend says that the statue appeared after a bull was struck by a farmer for destroying groundnut crops, transforming into stone and growing in size. The annual Kadlekai Parishe (Groundnut Fair) commemorates this legend, with farmers offering their first harvest to Lord Basava. Beyond the Bull Temple, Basavanagudi boasts other significant landmarks such as the Dodda Ganapathi Temple, home to a large Ganesha monolith, and Bugle Rock Park, featuring ancient rock formations dating back 3,000 million years. The park gets its name from the practice of a sentry blowing a bugle from the tower to signal safety or intrusion. Basavanagudi is also known for its vibrant markets like Gandhi Bazaar, where you can find fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables, and traditional handicrafts. The area is a hub for traditional South Indian cuisine, with famous restaurants like Vidyarthi Bhavan serving delicious masala dosas. With its blend of historical sites, cultural experiences, and culinary delights, Basavanagudi offers a captivating glimpse into Bangalore's rich heritage.
