M.N. Krishna Rao Park: A Serene Escape in Basavanagudi

M.N. Krishna Rao Park, often called MNK Park by locals, is a beloved green space in the historic Basavanagudi neighborhood of Bengaluru. Spanning 25 acres, the park provides a refreshing escape with its verdant lawns, vibrant flower beds, and towering trees that offer ample shade. Originally designed in the 1940s, the park holds the distinction of possibly being the first in India intended solely for women and children. This thoughtful gesture by Sir M.N. Krishna Rao, the acting Dewan of Mysore, aimed to provide a safe and private space for recreation and relaxation. Legend says that Krishna Rao himself was once denied entry by a vigilant watchman who was simply following the rules. The park features a variety of amenities for visitors of all ages. Jogging and walking paths wind through the grounds, while children can enjoy the play area with slides and swings. An outdoor gym and basketball court cater to fitness enthusiasts. The park also has an indoor badminton stadium. At the heart of the park stands the Krishna Rao Pavilion, a two-story structure designed by Berlin-born architect Otto H. Koenigsberger. Completed in 1941, the pavilion, with its octagonal plan and polygonal dome, once hosted music and cultural events. Today, it houses a public library, continuing its role as a center for community engagement. M.N. Krishna Rao Park is not just a green space but also a place to connect with Bengaluru's history and culture.
