Discover more about Begur Fort

Begur Fort, situated in the rapidly developing Akshayanagar area of Bangalore, offers a unique window into the city's history. Believed to have originated around the 9th century, the fort is more of a historical site than a formidable defensive structure. Encompassing roughly 1.4 square kilometers, the mud fort reveals a circular boundary that has remarkably endured for over a thousand years. Inside the fort's walls, visitors will find a functioning temple, a few old houses, and other remnants of the past. The Nageshwara temple, located about 3 km from the fort, features classic Chola architecture and art. An inscription dating back to 890 CE, discovered at the fort, contains the earliest known reference to 'Bengaluru'. The inscription describes a battle fought between the Jain Gangas and the Shaivite Nolambas. While the fort may not be as grand as some other historical sites, its significance lies in its connection to the city's origins and the sense of peacefulness it offers. It's a place where one can reflect on the past while observing the present-day cityscape evolving around it.
