Shri Dodda Ganapathi Temple: Bengaluru's Beloved Ganesha

Shri Dodda Ganapathi Temple, situated on Bull Temple Road in the Basavanagudi area of Bengaluru, is a significant religious and cultural landmark. The temple's history dates back to the 16th century, during the reign of Kempe Gowda I, the founder of Bangalore. Legend says that Kempe Gowda I stumbled upon a stone with an engraved image of Lord Ganesha and instructed sculptors to carve an idol of Ganapathi out of a single block of stone. The temple is renowned for its massive monolithic idol of Lord Ganesha, which stands approximately 18 feet (5.5 meters) tall and 16 feet (4.8 meters) wide. The sheer size of the idol is awe-inspiring, and it is considered one of the largest Ganesha statues in Karnataka. The deity is also known as Shakthi Ganapathi and Satya Ganapathi. It is believed that the idol is continuously expanding. Throughout the year, the temple is alive with festivals and ceremonies. Ganesh Chaturthi is the most prominent, with elaborate decorations and large gatherings. A unique event is the Benne Alankara, where the idol is covered with over 100 kilograms of butter. This offering is later distributed to devotees as prasad. Visiting the Dodda Ganapathi Temple offers a serene escape from the bustling city.
