History of Brigade Road

A Road in the Cantonment

Brigade Road developed within Bengaluru’s Cantonment, the eastern urban area shaped under British military administration from the late eighteenth century onwards. The Cantonment had its own streets, institutions and military establishments, distinct from the older pete, or native town, to the west. The road’s name is associated with the military brigade presence that formed part of this landscape. Although much of the original built environment has disappeared or been altered, the street’s location and nearby churches still reflect the Cantonment’s historical role in the growth of modern Bengaluru.

Churches and Commercial Expansion

As the Cantonment expanded during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, roads around Brigade Road connected military, residential, religious and commercial areas. St Patrick’s Church became an important local landmark, serving the Catholic community in a district where churches, schools and military institutions helped shape public life. Shops and services grew alongside the road’s transport connections and proximity to MG Road and Residency Road. This gradual commercialisation gave Brigade Road a practical role in central Bengaluru rather than making it solely a residential or institutional street.

From Cantonment Street to Retail Corridor

After Indian independence, the former Cantonment increasingly merged into Bengaluru’s expanding metropolitan economy. Brigade Road became associated with branded retail, restaurants, offices and youth-oriented leisure, while older low-rise premises were replaced or adapted for new commercial uses.
