Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: A Ride Through History

Embark on a nostalgic journey aboard the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), affectionately known as the 'Toy Train'. The tracks are a narrow gauge of 2 feet (610 mm).The DHR's route is a marvel of engineering, featuring six zig-zags and three loops (originally five) to navigate the steep gradients. One of the most famous is the Batasia Loop, offering panoramic views of Darjeeling and the snow-capped Kanchenjunga range. The train passes over five major and more than 450 minor bridges, negotiating over 870 curves along the way.Today, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway operates various services, including daily passenger trains hauled by diesel locomotives and the popular 'Joy Rides' between Darjeeling and Ghum, often pulled by historic steam engines. Ghum is the highest railway station in India, where visitors can explore the DHR Railway Museum.
