Vijayraghavgarh Fort: A Historical Marvel

Vijayraghavgarh Fort, situated in the town of Vijayraghavgarh in Madhya Pradesh, stands as a testament to the region's rich history and architectural heritage. Constructed in 1826 by Thakur Prayag Das, son of the Maihar King Bishan Singh, the fort is named after Lord Vijay Raghav, an incarnation of Lord Rama. The fort served as both a defensive structure and a royal residence. The fort's architecture is a blend of local and colonial styles. Red sandstone, sourced from nearby areas, was the primary building material. The fort is surrounded by a deep trench, reminiscent of the Red Fort of Delhi, which once served as a security measure, filled with water and crocodiles. Key features within the fort include the Rang Mahal, known for its beautiful design, the Sita Temple, soldier barracks, kitchens, and samadhis. The fort also houses a temple dedicated to Lord Vijay Raghav. Vijayraghavgarh Fort holds historical significance as a site of the 1857 Indian Rebellion. King Prayagdas participated in the revolt, disrupting the East India Company's supply lines. However, British forces eventually captured the fort, causing damage to its structure. Today, parts of the fort remain damaged as a reminder of the war. Visitors can explore the fort's courtyards, watchtowers offering panoramic views, and the Lord Vijay Raghav Temple. The fort is open from 8 AM to 5 PM. Admission is free, allowing visitors to experience this historical site without any cost. While some areas are well-maintained, others require renovation.
