The fort served as both a defensive structure and a royal residence. The fort's architecture is a blend of local and colonial styles. Red sandstone, sourced from nearby areas, was the primary building material. The fort is surrounded by a deep trench, reminiscent of the Red Fort of Delhi, which once served as a security measure, filled with water and crocodiles.
