Discover more about The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology

The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology (MCBT), also known as the Croc Bank, is a prominent reptile zoo and herpetology research station established in 1976. Located 40 km south of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India, the center spans 8.5 acres of coastal sand forests along the Bay of Bengal. Founded by Romulus Whitaker and Zai Whitaker, the MCBT was created to protect India's dwindling crocodilian populations. The Croc Bank is home to 15 species of crocodiles and 33 other reptilian species. It serves as a living genetic repository, initially designed to protect and multiply crocodile species for eventual reintroduction into their natural habitats. While releases into the wild have stopped due to habitat loss, the MCBT continues to be a leader in conservation, research, and education. The center also breeds threatened chelonians, including critically endangered species. Visitors can explore the park's diverse collection of reptiles, including crocodiles, turtles, lizards, and snakes. The MCBT offers guided tours and interactive experiences for all ages, with activities that are both informative and fun. The spacious grounds feature coastal dune forests that provide a haven for native wildlife, including water birds and Olive Ridley Sea Turtles. Visitors can also enjoy virtual reality reptile shows, gharial viewings in a naturalistic aquarium, and weekend talks by experts.
