Semmozhi Poonga: Chennai's Botanical Oasis

Semmozhi Poonga, meaning "Classical Language Park" in Tamil, is a verdant escape in the heart of Chennai. Inaugurated in November 2010, this 20-acre botanical garden was established by the Horticulture Department of Tamil Nadu. The park commemorates the classical status accorded to the Tamil language. Before becoming a botanical garden, the site was home to the Woodlands Drive-In restaurant. The transformation of this area into a botanical haven was an initiative to enhance greenery and serve as an educational hub. Semmozhi Poonga boasts over 500 species of plants, including medicinal herbs, aromatic plants, and exotic flowers. The garden is divided into themed sections, including a Palm Court, Tree Court, Golden Garden, Water and Rock Garden, and Butterfly Garden. Visitors can explore a wide variety of indigenous and exotic plant species. The garden incorporates elements of an Indo-Buddhist garden. Key attractions include an artificial pond and various aquatic plants and local bird habitats. Semmozhi Poonga serves as a cultural hub, hosting events that promote Tamil culture. The garden also offers guided tours, workshops, and educational programs on plant conservation. It's a popular destination for nature lovers, photographers, and families seeking a peaceful enclave.
