    Discover more about Vivekananda House

Vivekananda House, also known as Vivekanandar Illam, stands as a significant landmark in Chennai, embodying both historical importance and spiritual resonance. Originally constructed in 1842 as an ice storage facility by Frederic Tudor, it later became known as Castle Kernan when it was sold to Biligiri Iyengar, a lawyer who remodeled it. The building gained prominence when Swami Vivekananda stayed here for nine days in 1897 after his return from the West. During this time, he delivered inspiring lectures that stirred India's national consciousness. Following his stay, the Ramakrishna Math was founded here and functioned from this location for ten years. Today, Vivekananda House is maintained by the Ramakrishna Math and houses the 'Experience Vivekananda' museum. Visitors can explore exhibits on Indian culture, Swami Vivekananda's life, and his messages through virtual and augmented reality, 3D/4D effects, and Son et Lumiere elements. The museum includes art galleries, a meditation room where Vivekananda resided, and a park with exhibits of his teachings. A 4D VR movie called 'Tears of Vivekananda' is also shown. The building itself showcases Victorian-style architecture, featuring saddleback roofs, sunburst motifs, and arched windows. The site offers a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling city, with facilities such as restrooms, drinking water, and parking.
