Jama Masjid, located in Sector 6 of Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, stands as a prominent symbol of Islamic faith and architectural ingenuity. Completed in 1967, this Sunni Islam mosque is not only one of the largest in Chhattisgarh but also a unique landmark in the world of Islamic architecture.The mosque's distinctive design sets it apart, as it is built in the shape of the Arabic words 'Ya Allah,' meaning 'O Allah'. The 80-foot high minar embodies the 'Ya,' while the concrete walls of the first floor, topped with a slab, form the word 'Allah'. A marble dome crowns the structure, enhancing its beauty. The mosque's dimensions are impressive, with a height of 59 feet (including a 16-foot dome), a length of 120 feet, and a width of 100 feet. Adjacent to the mosque is a large Eid-gah measuring 250 feet long and 230 feet wide.Inside, the mosque is adorned with marble tiles and intricate calligraphy of Quranic verses. Plush carpets cover the floor of the spacious prayer hall, which can accommodate hundreds of worshippers. Jama Masjid serves as a central place of worship for the Muslim community in Bhilai and hosts various religious and cultural events, including Eid celebrations, Ramadan Iftars, and educational programs.The mosque's origins trace back to the early 1960s when Muslim executives at the Bhilai Steel Plant sought a dedicated space for worship. The Bhilai Nagar Masjid Trust was formed, and the steel plant allotted a 12,000 square foot plot in Sector 6 for the mosque's construction. Construction began in 1964 and concluded in 1967, with the first Friday prayer held on March 31, 1967.Today, Jama Masjid welcomes visitors of all faiths to appreciate its architectural beauty and spiritual significance.
