Established in 1955, the center's jurisdiction covers Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, and the Lakshadweep Islands, including the Western and Eastern Ghats. The BSI-SRC plays a crucial role in exploring, documenting, and conserving the plant resources of southern India. Its meticulously maintained gardens feature a diverse collection of indigenous and exotic plant species, including rare and endangered ones. The center's mission extends beyond research, aiming to educate the public about biodiversity and environmental conservation. Visitors can explore the Madras Herbarium, one of the oldest and most renowned herbaria, and a museum displaying over 2500 exhibits, including carpological collections, seeds, preserved specimens, timber samples, and ethnobotanical displays. The BSI-SRC's national orchidarium and associated garden are located in Yercaud, approximately 190 km from Coimbatore. The BSI was established in 1890, with the goal of exploring India's plant resources and identifying those with economic potential. Reorganized in 1954, the BSI now focuses on intensive floristic surveys, documenting plant distribution and ecology, and maintaining herbaria.
