Discover more about Deshbandhu Museum

The Deshbandhu Museum, or 'Step Aside' as it's still known locally, is a poignant reminder of India's struggle for independence. Located on C.R. Das Road in Darjeeling, the museum occupies the two-story building where the great patriot and freedom fighter Chittaranjan Das, also known as Deshbandhu (Friend of the Nation), spent the last month of his life. He passed away here on June 16, 1925. The house itself was built around 1900 and was initially owned by Mr. Warnsei before being purchased by Sir N.N. Sircar, a friend of Deshbandhu. Deshbandhu came to Darjeeling seeking rest from his hectic political life. Mahatma Gandhi and Annie Besant were among the leaders who visited him here. The museum was inaugurated on November 5, 2007. The first floor of the building has been converted into a museum, preserving Deshbandhu's personal articles and furniture. Visitors can see the room where he breathed his last. The ground floor houses a maternity and child welfare center, honoring his commitment to serving the poor. Visiting the Deshbandhu Museum offers a serene escape from the bustling streets of Darjeeling. It provides a contemplative experience and a deeper understanding of the region's significance in the freedom movement.
