Dali Monastery: A Tranquil Tibetan Retreat in Darjeeling

Nestled in the lush green hills of Darjeeling, the Dali Monastery, or Druk Sangag Choling Monastery, offers a tranquil escape and a glimpse into Tibetan Buddhist culture. Established in 1971 by Kyabje Thuksey Rinpoche, the monastery belongs to the Kagyupa sect and serves as an important center for Buddhist teachings and meditation. It is home to over 200 monks who have come from the Himalayan region to learn and practice Buddhism. The monastery's architecture reflects traditional Tibetan design, with brightly colored walls depicting the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. Inside, visitors can find a prayer room adorned with large, cylindrical golden drums used during prayer ceremonies, creating a spiritually uplifting ambiance. A small library houses books on Buddhism and philosophy. The monastery also has a café that serves tea, coffee, and vegetarian snacks. The Dali Monastery provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The monastery was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 1993, where he taught the monks about Buddhism. Visiting during prayer times (5:00 am to 6:30 am and 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm) allows visitors to witness the monks' chanting and immerse themselves in the monastery's peaceful vibrations.
