Nestled at an elevation of approximately 7,407 feet (2,258 meters), Ghoom Monastery offers a tranquil escape amidst the breathtaking Himalayan landscape. Founded in 1850 by Lama Sherab Gyatso, a Mongolian astrologer and monk , the monastery is a significant landmark representing the rich cultural heritage of Tibetan Buddhism in the region. The monastery belongs to the Gelugpa sect, also known as the Yellow Hat sect, one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The main attraction is the 15-foot high statue of Maitreya Buddha, crafted with clay brought from Tibet and covered in gold paint. This statue symbolizes the future Buddha and is a major point of devotion and artistry. Ghoom Monastery also houses an impressive library containing a rich collection of Buddhist scriptures, manuscripts, and ancient texts. The walls are adorned with intricate murals and Tibetan artwork, depicting Buddhist teachings and mythology. Visitors can witness prayer ceremonies and experience the daily life of the monks, immersing themselves in the spiritual essence of the monastery.
