Ghoom Monastery: A Spiritual Haven in Darjeeling

Nestled at an elevation of approximately 7,407 feet (2,258 meters), Ghoom Monastery offers a tranquil escape amidst the breathtaking Himalayan landscape. Founded in 1850 by Lama Sherab Gyatso, a Mongolian astrologer and monk , the monastery is a significant landmark representing the rich cultural heritage of Tibetan Buddhism in the region. The main attraction is the 15-foot high statue of Maitreya Buddha, crafted with clay brought from Tibet and covered in gold paint. Ghoom Monastery also houses an impressive library containing a rich collection of Buddhist scriptures, manuscripts, and ancient texts.
