Darjeeling Clock Tower: A Timeless Sentinel

The Darjeeling Clock Tower, a nostalgic sentinel in the heart of Darjeeling, marks the passage of time and preserves the town's colonial history. Erected in 1850, the tower was initially part of the Planters' Club and later became a part of the Municipality Building. In 1921, the hall was rebuilt at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 lakh, with half of the amount donated by the Maharaja of Cooch Behar. The foundation stone for the new Town Hall (Capitol Hall) was laid by Lord Ronaldshay in 1917. The tower's neo-Gothic and neo-Classical architecture captivates visitors, while its location at the intersection of Gandhi Road and Ladenla Road makes it a focal point of the town. Known locally as 'Ghanta Ghar,' the 100-foot-tall stone tower serves as a meeting place, a timepiece, and a reminder of Darjeeling's rich history. The clock itself was made by GT Gent and Company of England. Though it survived a fire in 1996, it went dead and was later repaired in 2006 by the Darjeeling Rotary Club. The musical clock chimes a fine tone followed by the striking of a bell every hour. Today, the area surrounding the Clock Tower, called 'Chowrasta' or Four Roads, is a bustling hub where diverse cultures converge. Visitors can explore nearby marketplaces, savor local delicacies, shop for souvenirs, and engage with the vibrant community. The tower also provides a comforting sense of orientation amidst the charming chaos of Darjeeling's narrow, winding streets.
