Explore the ancient artistry of Bhrameswar Temple, a tribute to Lord Shiva and Odisha's Kalinga architectural heritage.

4.4

Bhrameswar Temple, located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is a meticulously carved Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Historians estimate that the temple was constructed around the late 11th century, based on now-lost inscriptions that were initially on the temple. These records suggest it was built in 1058 CE by Kolavati Devi, the mother of Somavamsi King Udyotakesari. The temple's architecture showcases a blend of Lingaraja and Kalinga styles and is made of sandstone. It adheres to the Panchayatana temple design, featuring a main shrine with four smaller temples at each corner and a large square pond within the complex. The temple complex consists of the main temple, four corner shrines, and a large square tank to the south. The Vimana (sanctum), Natamandira (dance hall), Jagamohana (prayer hall), and Bhogamandapa (offering hall) are the four parts of the temple. Inside, the temple walls are adorned with detailed sculptures and carvings, including images of deities, birds, animals, dancers, and scenes from mythology. The temple is known for its erotic sculptures and carvings. The temple also provides insight into the Devadasi tradition, where beautiful women were presented to the deity for worship and entertainment through music and dance. The use of iron beams in the temple's construction marks a first in temple architectural history. Open from 6 am to 8 pm every day, visitors can explore the temple's rich history and intricate design. The temple is about 5 kilometers from the Bhubaneswar Railway Station and the Biju Patnaik International Airport, making it easily accessible.
