Constructed in the 11th century, around 1058 CE, during the Somavamsi dynasty, the temple represents a significant milestone in Kalinga architecture. Queen Kolavati Devi, the mother of King Udyotakesari, commissioned its construction. The temple's architecture is a blend of Lingaraja and Kalinga styles. It is classified as a Panchayatana temple, featuring a main shrine and four smaller shrines at the corners, along with a large pond. The main shrine rises to 60 feet. The temple is made of sandstone, adorned with detailed carvings and sculptures on both the inner and outer walls. These carvings depict scenes from Hindu mythology, daily life, and geometric patterns. Traditional wood carving techniques were adapted for the stone structure. The temple complex includes the Vimana (sanctum), Jagamohana (prayer hall), Natamandira (dance hall), and Bhogamandapa (offering hall). The Jagamohana is known for its lion head idols, and the sanctum houses a black stone Shivalinga and idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Lakshmi.
