Discover more about Taj-ul-Masajid

Taj-ul-Masajid, or 'The Crown of Mosques,' stands as a testament to Islamic architecture and cultural heritage in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This 19th-century mosque is the largest in India and one of the largest in Asia, capable of accommodating up to 175,000 worshippers. The construction of Taj-ul-Masajid began in 1877 by Nawab Shah Jahan Begum and her daughter, Sultan Jahan Begum, who ruled Bhopal. However, due to a shortage of funds and other architectural projects, its construction was delayed and only completed in 1985. The mosque's architecture is inspired by the Mughal style, featuring a pink facade crafted from red sandstone and adorned with three stark white bulbous domes. Two 18-story high octagonal minarets, each topped with a white dome, flank the main structure. The main prayer hall boasts impressive pillars supporting 27 ceilings, 16 of which are decorated with petalled motifs. The marble flooring is reminiscent of the Jama Masjid in Delhi and the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore. The Taj-ul-Masajid also houses the Darul Uloom, a religious school established in 1950, where students learn about Islam, Arabic, Hindi, English, mathematics, and other modern subjects. The mosque complex includes a large courtyard with an ablution tank, adding to the serene atmosphere. Visitors can explore the mosque's grand structure, intricate designs, and historical significance. The best time to visit is during the winter months (October to March) to avoid the গরম weather. The mosque is open to all, but non-Muslims may not be allowed on Fridays.
