Discover more about Warangal Fort

Located in Warangal, Telangana, Warangal Fort is a striking example of Kakatiya dynasty architecture. Constructed primarily in the 13th century by King Ganapati Deva and his daughter Rani Rudrama, the fort served as the capital of the Kakatiya dynasty from the 12th to the 14th centuries. The fort symbolizes the cultural and architectural zenith of the Kakatiya period. Today, the fort complex, spread over a 19-kilometer radius, lies mostly in ruins. However, it still exudes a grand aura through its impressive stone gateways, known as Kakatiya Kala Thoranam, which have become an emblem of Telangana. These ornamental gates originally formed the entrances to a great Shiva temple. The fort once had three concentric circular walls for robust defense. The outermost wall was an earthen embankment surrounded by a wide moat. The inner walls were constructed with massive granite stones fitted together without mortar, showcasing remarkable engineering. Visitors can explore the remains of temples, halls, and defensive walls, admiring the intricate sculptures and carvings that adorn the ruins. The fort's architecture reflects a blend of different dynasties, primarily influenced by the Kakatiya style. Despite the destruction from multiple attacks, including those by Malik Kafur in 1309 and Ulugh Khan in 1320, the fort remains a significant historical and archaeological site. Warangal Fort is not just an archaeological treasure but also a place where visitors can admire the craftsmanship of ancient temple architecture. The site is listed as a Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India and is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
