Discover more about Borra Caves

The Borra Caves, also known as Borra Guhalu, are a mesmerizing network of limestone caves nestled in the Ananthagiri Hills of the Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh. Discovered in 1807 by British geologist William King George, these natural formations have become a major attraction, drawing visitors into their depths to witness the breathtaking results of time and nature's artistry. Formed over millions of years by the Gosthani River's erosive flow, the caves feature a stunning collection of stalactites and stalagmites. The caves extend to a depth of 80 meters and are considered the deepest caves in India. The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation has installed lighting to showcase the unique formations, with some resembling recognizable shapes like Shiva-Parvati, Mother-Child, and a human brain, sparking mythological tales and local lore. The caves also hold religious importance, with a Shiva Lingam and an idol of a cow (Kamadhenu) found within. Local tribal communities have long revered the caves, adding to their mystique and cultural significance. Surrounding the caves, the Araku Valley offers breathtaking scenery, lush greenery, and diverse flora and fauna. The journey to the caves is an experience in itself, with winding roads and train routes passing through tunnels and offering panoramic views of the Eastern Ghats.
