4.7

The Konark Sun Temple, located about 35 kilometers northeast of Puri on the coastline of Odisha, India, is a stunning testament to ancient Indian artistry and religious devotion. Constructed in the 13th century CE during the reign of King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, the temple is dedicated to the Hindu Sun God, Surya. The name 'Konark' is derived from the Sanskrit words 'Kona' (corner) and 'Arka' (sun). The temple's design is that of a colossal chariot, with twelve pairs of intricately carved stone wheels and drawn by seven horses, symbolizing Surya's journey across the heavens. The wheels function as sundials, accurately marking time to the minute. The temple's base and walls are adorned with elaborate carvings of deities, mythical creatures, scenes from courtly life, and erotic sculptures, offering a glimpse into the social, religious, and cultural life of the 13th century. Over time, the temple has suffered damage from natural elements and possible desecration. The main sanctum tower no longer exists. However, the remaining structures, including the audience hall (Jagamohana) and dance hall (Nata Mandir), showcase the pinnacle of Kalinga architecture. The temple is also known as the 'Black Pagoda' because of its dark color. The Konark Sun Temple remains a major pilgrimage site for Hindus and a celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
