Dali Monastery: A Sanctuary of Tibetan Buddhism in Darjeeling

Nestled in the hills of Darjeeling, about 5 kilometers from the town center, Dali Monastery, or Druk Sangag Choling Monastery, is a captivating spiritual retreat. Established in 1971 by Kyabje Thuksey Rinpoche, the monastery belongs to the Kagyupa sect of Tibetan Buddhism and serves as an important center for Buddhist teachings and meditation. The monastery's architecture showcases the traditional Tibetan style, with vibrant colors depicting the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. As you approach the monastery, the large, bold letters of 'Druk Sangag Choling Monastery' are prominently displayed. Inside, you'll find a prayer room adorned with huge, cylindrical golden drums, creating a spiritual ambiance during prayer times. A small library houses books on Buddhism and philosophical acts of life. Dali Monastery is home to over 200 monks and disciples, offering visitors a glimpse into their peaceful way of life. In 1993, the Dalai Lama visited the monastery, imparting profound teachings on Tibetan religion and culture. The monastery also features a cafe where you can relax and enjoy vegetarian snacks and beverages. Although the monastery is open from morning until evening, the best times to visit are during the morning and evening prayers.
