Hanuman Tok: A Spiritual Sanctuary with Himalayan Views

Hanuman Tok, meaning 'Hanuman's Temple', is a revered Hindu temple in Gangtok, Sikkim, dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Situated at an altitude of 7,200 feet (2,194 meters), the temple provides breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga mountain range and the valley below. The serene environment attracts tourists and locals seeking tranquility and spiritual solace. According to legend, Lord Hanuman rested at this very spot while carrying the Sanjeevani herb from the Himalayas to Lanka to save Lord Rama's brother, Lakshmana. Locals had worshipped a stone at this site for centuries. In the 1950s, an officer named Appaji Pant had a divine dream and constructed a statue of Lord Hanuman, transforming it into a proper temple. Since 1968, the Indian Army's 17 Mountain Division has maintained the temple, ensuring its cleanliness and serenity. The temple's architecture blends traditional Sikkimese and Hindu styles. The main prayer hall features intricate carvings and vibrant murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana. The temple complex includes the main temple, an older temple, and a unique circular temple. Visitors can also see a small Saibaba Temple near the Hanuman Temple, stupas, and chortens. The royal cremation grounds, Lukshyama, are located near the stairway entrance. Visitors often climb the stairs to reach the temple, passing prayer bells along the way. The temple is considered a wish-fulfilling temple, attracting many devotees. Besides its religious significance, Hanuman Tok offers a 360-degree view of the mountains and valleys, especially Mount Kanchenjunga.
