Nestled in the village of Bandora, near Ponda in Goa, Shree Mahalaxmi Saunsthan is a significant center of Shakti worship and Goan Saraswat Brahmin tradition. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mahalaxmi, regarded as an incarnation of power and energy and worshipped as the giver of wealth, peace and dharmic guidance. The deity is considered the family goddess (Kuladevata) of many Goan Hindus. The temple's history dates back to the 19th century, with the current structure built after the original idol was moved from Colva to protect it from Portuguese destruction. The architecture is a blend of traditional and modern Konkani styles, featuring intricate carvings, wooden pillars, and a traditional Goan-style ceiling. A unique feature of the Mahalaxmi idol is the linga on her head, representing a peaceful or Satvik form of the Devi. The idol has four arms holding a sickle, a club, a dagger, and a vessel containing prasad and flowers and resembles the Mahalaxmi idol at Kolhapur. The temple celebrates several festivals, including Navaratri, Shri Ram Navami, Mahalakshmi Pratishthapana Day, and Maha Shivaratri. The annual Rath Yatra is a grand chariot procession that attracts devotees and tourists alike.
