Discover more about Shri Nageshi Temple

Shri Nageshi Temple, also known as Shri Nagesh Maharudra Temple, is an ancient and significant Hindu temple located in Bandora village, Ponda, Goa. Dedicated to Lord Nagesh, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, it stands as one of Goa's oldest temples, dating back to 1413 AD. The temple's history is intertwined with local folklore, with legends recounting the discovery of the Shiva linga by a cowherd whose cow mysteriously showered milk on a stone in the forest. The temple's architecture reflects the traditional Goan style, showcasing a blend of simplicity and spiritual elegance. Key features include the magnificent five-storied lamp tower (Deepstambha), which stands as a beacon of devotion, and an ancient water tank. The Sabha Mandap, a congregation hall, features intricately carved wooden panels depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The temple complex also houses shrines dedicated to Lord Laxmi Narayan and Lord Ganapati. Unlike many other temples in Goa, Shri Nageshi Temple remained unaffected by Portuguese rule due to its location in the Antruj of Ponda Mahal, which was outside Portuguese domain. This allowed the temple to preserve its original structure and traditions, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into Goa's ancient religious practices. Today, the temple continues to be a significant pilgrimage site, attracting devotees and tourists alike with its serene atmosphere and historical importance.
