Discover more about Shiv Mandir

Nestled on a small hillock in the heart of Gulmarg, the Shiv Mandir, also known as the Maharani Temple, offers a serene escape amidst the stunning landscapes of Kashmir. Constructed in 1915 by Maharani Mohini Bai Sisodia, the wife of Maharaja Hari Singh, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and was once the royal temple of the Dogra kings. The temple's architecture reflects a blend of Kashmiri and Victorian styles, with its unique stone construction and distinctive pyramidal dome making it visible from nearly every corner of Gulmarg. The temple gained further prominence when it was featured in the Bollywood song 'Jai Jai Shiv Shankar' in the 1970s. Visitors can immerse themselves in the temple's peaceful ambiance, appreciate the stunning views, and learn about its history and cultural significance. The temple has long been revered as a symbol of religious harmony, with a Muslim priest even performing the priestly duties for many years. While a fire in June 2024 caused damage to the temple, efforts are underway to honor its legacy and commemorate its historical significance. Despite the unfortunate event, the Shiv Mandir remains a must-visit destination in Gulmarg, offering a glimpse into the region's rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
