Discover more about Gulmarg Golf Course

Nestled in the heart of the Himalayas, the Gulmarg Golf Course stands as one of the world's highest green golf courses, offering an unparalleled golfing experience at an altitude of 2,650 meters (8,690 feet) above sea level. Located approximately 52 kilometers (32 miles) from Srinagar, in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, India, this 18-hole course is a testament to the region's rich history and breathtaking natural beauty. The Gulmarg Golf Course was established in 1911 by the British, who used the area as a recreational retreat. Initially a 6-hole course built by Colonel Neville Chamberlain in 1890, it quickly gained popularity, becoming known as India's golfing mecca. In 1922, the first golf championship was held here, followed by the introduction of the Nedou's Cup in 1929. The course was redesigned in 1970 by Peter Thomson and again in 2011 by Ranjit Nanda, transforming it into a challenging 18-hole course that meets international standards. The course spans 7,505 yards, with a par of 72, and presents a challenging layout with narrow, undulating fairways, bunkers, and water hazards. The greens are well-maintained, offering a fast and subtle playing surface. Golfers can enjoy panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, lush green valleys, and a diverse array of alpine flowers that bloom from June to September. The signature hole, the 8th, is a 610-yard par 5 and the longest hole in India. The Gulmarg Golf Course is open to the public from April to November, as heavy snowfall covers the course during the winter months. During this time, it transforms into a winter sports center for skiing and snowboarding. The Gulmarg Golf Club provides facilities such as a clubhouse, pro shop, restaurant, and equipment rentals.
