Located approximately 56 km northwest of Srinagar, it sits at an altitude of nearly 9,000 feet, offering panoramic views of the Himalayas. Originally known as 'Gaurimarg,' its history dates back to the 16th century when it was a favored retreat for Mughal emperors like Jahangir. The British developed Gulmarg as a summer escape in the 19th century, establishing the Gulmarg Golf Club in 1927, one of the highest in the world. Today, Gulmarg is a year-round destination, drawing visitors with its natural beauty and adventure activities. In winter, it transforms into a skiers' paradise, offering world-class skiing, snowboarding, and heli-skiing opportunities. The Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, provides access to the slopes of Mount Apharwat, offering breathtaking views. Gulmarg also has other attractions, including the Maharani Temple and St. Mary's Church.

    Getting There

    Public Transport

    From Srinagar Airport, take a bus to Batmaloo bus station. From there, board a bus to Tangmarg. In winter, buses may only reach Tangmarg, and the remaining 11 km to Gulmarg can be covered by a shared taxi or jeep. Bus fares are nominal. Shared taxis from Tangmarg to Gulmarg cost approximately INR 50-100 per person.

    Taxi

    Taxis are readily available from Srinagar Airport to Gulmarg. The fare ranges from INR 2500 to INR 3500 for a one-way trip. The journey takes approximately 2 hours. During winter, ensure the taxi has snow chains or 4x4 capability for the final stretch from Tangmarg to Gulmarg.

    Gondola

    The Gulmarg Gondola is a two-stage cable car. Purchase tickets online or at the base station. Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori) costs INR 740-900, and Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak) costs INR 950-1200. A chairlift from Kongdoori to Mary's Shoulder costs an additional INR 300. Expect queues, especially during peak season.
