Discover more about Asigarh Fort

Asigarh Fort, or Hansi Fort, is located in the town of Hansi, Haryana, approximately 135 km from Delhi. This historical structure, also known as Prithvi Raj Chauhan Ka Qila, is considered one of the most impregnable forts of ancient India. Declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1937, the fort's origins trace back to the BCE period, evidenced by the excavation of ancient coins. Believed to have been initially constructed by Harshavardhana or his grandfather Prabhakaravardhana of the Pushyabhuti dynasty, the fort has seen numerous rulers and witnessed significant historical events. Anangpal Tomar, the Tomar King of Delhi, is also strongly associated with the fort's founding. His son established a sword manufacturing factory within the fort, giving it the name 'Asigarh,' meaning 'sword fort'. Swords crafted here were even exported to Arab countries. Over the centuries, the fort has been under the control of Prithviraj Chauhan, Mohammed Gauri, and various Mughal rulers. George Thomas, an Irish adventurer, rebuilt the fort in 1798, making it his capital. The British East India Company seized it in 1803. The fort played a role in the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, after which it was damaged. The fort's architecture displays Hindu and Islamic styles. The walls, rising to 52 feet in height and 37 feet in width, feature carvings of Hindu origin. Inside the complex, visitors can find a mosque added after Prithviraj Chauhan's defeat, as well as the Baradari, a pillared structure with a flat roof. Excavations have also revealed 57 bronze images of Jain Tirthankars. Today, the partially restored fort allows visitors to explore its ramparts, gates, and panoramic views, offering a glimpse into India's vibrant past.
