Discover more about Hadimba Devi Temple

The Hadimba Devi Temple, also known as Dhungri Temple, is an ancient cave temple dedicated to Hidimbi Devi, wife of Bhima, a figure in the Indian epic Mahabharata. The temple is located in Manali, a hill station in Himachal Pradesh, and is surrounded by a dense cedar forest called Dhungiri Van Vihar at the foot of the Himalayas. The temple was built in 1553 AD by Maharaja Bahadur Singh. The structure is built around a cave where Devi Hidimba is believed to have meditated. The sanctuary is built over a huge rock jutting out of the ground which was worshiped as an image of the deity. The temple's architecture is unique, with a four-tiered pagoda roof and intricate wooden carvings. The walls are constructed with stone and mud, and the roof is cone-shaped and made with timber. The main doorway is adorned with paintings of goddesses and animals. Inside the temple, there is a small, sacred footprint said to belong to Hadimba Devi. Unlike many Hindu temples, there is no idol of the goddess; instead, she is symbolically represented by a stone. The temple is a significant pilgrimage site, attracting devotees seeking blessings and solace. The locals revere Hadimba Devi as a guardian and bestower of blessings. The temple is open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM every day. There is no entry fee to visit the temple. The best time to visit is between April and July for pleasant weather or September to November for fewer crowds. During the annual Dhungri Mela festival in May, the temple is decorated with flowers and lights, and traditional dances and music performances are held.
