Naggar Castle: A Himalayan Marvel

Naggar Castle, perched on a hillside in the Kullu Valley, is a captivating blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. Built around 1460 AD by Raja Sidh Singh of Kullu, the castle served as the royal residence for centuries. Its unique Kathkuni architecture, characterized by interlocking stone and wood, showcases the region's traditional craftsmanship. This construction style not only adds to the castle's aesthetic appeal but also provides resilience against earthquakes, a common occurrence in the region. Over the years, Naggar Castle has witnessed many historical events. In the early 20th century, the British used it as a rest house, adding European elements like staircases and fireplaces. In 1978, the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) took over the castle, converting it into a heritage hotel. Today, it attracts visitors from around the globe, offering a unique opportunity to stay in a historic setting. Inside the castle, you'll find intricate wooden carvings, arched balconies, and a central courtyard. The castle also houses a museum displaying artifacts related to the history and culture of the Kullu Valley. Within the castle grounds are three small shrines of religious significance. The Roerich Art Gallery, dedicated to the works of Russian artist Nicholas Roerich, is also located nearby. From the castle, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Beas River, snow-capped mountains, and lush green valleys.
