Discover more about Buddha Statue

The Buddha Statue of Hyderabad is an iconic testament to India's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Located in the serene Hussain Sagar Lake, this monumental sculpture serves as a major tourist attraction and a symbol of peace and harmony. Conceived by N. T. Rama Rao, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from 1983 to 1989, the statue was inspired by the Statue of Liberty, symbolizing the greatness and diversity of Indian culture. The statue is carved from a single block of white granite sourced from a mountainside near Raigiri, Bhuvanagiri, about 46 kilometers from Hyderabad. Around 200 sculptors worked for two years to create this marvel. The statue was transported to Hyderabad in 1988 on a carriage with 192 wheels, covering 60 kilometers. After an initial mishap where the statue fell into the lake, it was successfully erected on a concrete platform, known as the Rock of Gibraltar, in 1992. In 2006, the Dalai Lama consecrated the statue. Standing at 72 feet (22 meters) and weighing over 450 tons, the Buddha Statue is the world's tallest monolith of Gautama Buddha. It depicts Buddha in the Abhayamudra pose, symbolizing peace and fearlessness. The statue's location amidst Hussain Sagar Lake enhances its tranquil ambiance, making it a place of solace and reflection. The lake itself was built in 1562 and is one of Hyderabad's prominent landmarks. Visitors can reach the statue via a ferry service from Lumbini Park. The best time to visit is in the evening when the statue is illuminated with colorful lights.
