Originally a private collection of the Salar Jung family, it was later endowed to the nation. Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, Salar Jung III, the former Prime Minister of the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad, spent a substantial part of his income over 35 years collecting artifacts from around the world.
