    Discover more about Charminar

Charminar, meaning 'Four Minarets,' is an iconic landmark in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. Constructed in 1591 by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, the monument commemorates the founding of Hyderabad and is believed by some to signify the end of a plague that devastated the city. Other theories suggest it was built to honor the Sultan's wife, Bhagmati, or to mark the beginning of the second Islamic millennium year. The Charminar is a square structure with each side measuring 20 meters (66 ft). Four grand arches face the cardinal directions, opening onto the streets below. At each corner stands a 56-meter (184 ft) high minaret, featuring a double balcony and a bulbous dome. The structure is made of granite, limestone, mortar, and pulverized marble, weighing approximately 14,000 tonnes. The architectural style is Indo-Islamic, incorporating Persian influences with Hindu ornamentation. For over 400 years, a mosque has existed on the top floor. The structure also has 45 prayer spaces. The Charminar is located at the intersection of historical trade routes, and the Old City of Hyderabad was designed with it as a centerpiece. The surrounding markets, especially Laad Bazaar, are famous for bangles, silks, spices, and jewelry. Today, Charminar is a major tourist attraction, representing Hyderabad's rich history, culture, and architectural heritage.
